The beginning of background improvement

So As I mentionned last post, I gave up on the weekly portrait to let all the place to Background work.

I decided to start with something simple: thumbnails (I used my Geo TRavel guide as a visual reference). So here are the results:

And as a bonus, here are gesture studies (I thought they were worth sharing) I did for my Gesture class I'm taking at schoolism.com:

Comme mentionné lors de mon dernier message, j'ai laissé faire mes portraits de la semaine, pour me concentrer sur les backgrounds.

Et pour commencer, j'y suis allée assez simplement... des thumbnails! J'ai utilisé mon guide de voyage Géo pour une référence visuelle. Alors allez voir plus haut le résultat!

The last portrait...

Hi there!

So here is my portrait of the week.... ME! It took me about 3 hours... I guess the no body and the size of the paper (5 x 7 this time) helped in cutting the work time...

I've been thinking about this plan of doing a portrait a week in the past few days, and realised that it wasn't such a great plan after all... Why? Well I think there are other drawing aspects that I would gain more to work on as I do not plan to become a portraitist...

So for now on I will be posting every week, but it will be about environment/background (if you go trough my portfolio, you will see that they do need a little work)...

Voici mon protrait de la semaine... Moi! Ça m'a pris environ 3 heures... La grandeur du papier (5 x 7) et pas de corps a dû aider à diminuer le temps de travail...

J'ai réfléchi au sujet de mon plan de faire un portrait par semaine, et je suis venue à la conclusion que c'était loin d'être un bon plan, puisque je ne vise pas à devenir une portraitiste. Je pense que je gagnerais plus à travailler sur d'autres aspects comme les backgrounds (si vous allez voir mon portfolio, vous comprendrez ce que je veux dire) .

Donc à partir de maintenant, mon plan est de faire un dessin de background par semaine.

I had time to spare today, so I made a valentine's day card! I used a design I did for kraftin Kimmie Stamps a while back: Cupid.

A new Portrait!

Hi there!So here is another portrait I did: Marianne, my cousin's daughter. The picture I used was taken by a friend of my cousin: Marilyn Francetich. Here again, I used graphite 2H, HB and B and I managed to finish it within 8 hours.

A new beginning! - Un nouveau départ!

It is official: I'm getting more serious about getting my art out there. And after some research, it seems that blogging is a must!

So from now on, I'm committing myself to blogging more then once a month: I will share my work on a more regular basis!

So why not start right now?! If you went thought my Portfolio on my website, you'll notice that what I'm about to show you is not what I usually do. I decided to practice my portrait/caricature skills, so I'll be drawing one, once a week for the next little while.

So for this week, I drew my little cousin Maximilien. I think he was about 10 months olds at the time the picture I used was taken. It took a while.... About 8 hours... (I blame it all the crocodile on his pid j, but hopefully I'll get faster with practice!!) And I used graphite pencils 2H HB and B.

C'est officiel: Je suis déterminée à partager mon art avec le plus de monde possible! Après quelques recherches, il semblerait que blogguer est un incontournable!

Alors, à partir de maintenant, je m'engage à blogguer plus qu'une fois par mois: je vais régulièrement partager mon travail!

Si vous êtes allés faire un tour sur mon Portfolio sur mon site web, vous remarquerez que ce que je m'apprête à vous montrer ne correspond pas à ce que je fais normalement. J'ai décidé de pratiquer mes portraits/caricature, alors jusqu'à nouvel avis, je vais en dessiner un par semaine.

Pour cette semaine, j'ai dessiné mon petit cousin Maximilien. Il devait avoir autour de 10 mois sur la photo que j'ai utilisé. Ça m'a pris près de 8 hours... (C'est la faute des crocodiles sur son pyjama... J'imagine qu'avec de la pratique, je vais prendre de la vitesse!) J'ai utilisé des crayons graphites h2 HB et B.

Merry September's ChisTmaS to all Blog HoppeRs!

Hope you'll have as much fun coloring these christmas characters as I had creating them!!

For my little painting, I used : Rudy the Reindeer Stamp!

I painted him with gouache on watercolor paper. What an adventure it been! I don't know if you know, but gouache is an opaque type paint. So it was quite interesting to use as it added a 'color shade' to my black line from the stamp. The result was quite nice until I reached the gingerbread cookie. I guess I didn't put enough water with my paint, so the line completely dissipired! Oh my! I was starting to panick when my black pen came to the rescue just in time! I think we got carried away a little... As you can see, there are plenty of black dots everywhere!!! Oh well! The black pen save my day as I'm quite happy with the final result! Hope you'll enjoy it too! ( to present it I glued it to a red sheet and the red bg is just photoshop in. I'll let the karfty girl handle the paper stuff, they're So good at it!!)

The beginning of a new adventure: Kraftin' Kimmie's Stamps!

About 3 months ago, I was hanging out with a good friend of mine, Annie, who's designing stamps for kraftin' kimmies stamps. Stamps came on the subject at some point and she said: 'you just have to write to kimmie to see if she would like to work with you'. So I did! And here I am! YeaH!

So After 2.5 months of waiting, I can finally see the beautiful cards kraftin' Kimmie's Stamps design team made with the stamps I created (you can see them too!) And they did such a great job!

On sunday they will be available to all for hours of fun!

L'internation'ART de Roberval part II

Last friday was L'internation'ART de Roberval's opening night. So I left quebec friday early afternoon on board my dirty Volks in direction of Roberval with little stress... ok, OK, with a fair amount of it.

Can you imagine thousands of people looking at my work while I'm beside them? Well I could totally imagine it, and it would have driven me crasy if a friend of mine would not have been there and supported my moral! (by the way, this is Roberval we are talking about... so there wasn't thousands of people, but 300, which is still in anycase quite stressful)

So after a 3 hours drive, we reached Roberval, got to the hotel, find some food, and decided to walk to the library where the event is held. We ended up being late. OuPS! We walked for a while in the wrong direction... And on google map, Roberval seemed smaller too.

But we got there, and we got the hear the ending of Albert Miller speach, and the presentation of the artists exposing.

I did the tour to see with whom I have the joy to be exposing with. And ran into 2 friends of montreal who drove all the way to Roberval to see my work. I was extremely happy to see them there!

For the rest, I think I will need to work on my people skills as I felt totally out of my confort zone standing by my work hoping someone would come to talk to me and unable to start a conversation with the people looking at my paintings. Hopefully it will come with time.

So Roberval being quite far, here is a video which gives you a good idea of what the exposition looks like.

How exciting? From april 8 to june 8 2011, my art work will be available to see at the library Georges-Henri-Lévesque in Roberval!!

But what is this art show about? 'L'internation'ART is an event with a simple and unifying concept, based on innovatif artistic practices which allow the discovery of art works of qualities. The european's art is different from the North-American one and this is to open new cultural horizons that Caroline Houde and Hélènecaroline Fournier created this event. The public will find the most diversified expressions, created by artists who offer a sample of the vision of the international art of our time.' (my translation of the explanation given by Helenecaroline fournier, co-commissaire d'exposition).

Where to start? I guess my best bet would be to introduce myself... My name is Emilie and I live in Quebec city. I'm a navigation officer for the canadian coast guard, but also an drawing artist at heart.

So I intend to use this blog to share with you my adventures, thoughts and art.
